Swimming in Lake Ossiach

Firn instead of powder
The slopes face south. From March the crust carries you in the morning and softens by midday. A late breakfast makes for better skiing.
Ski touring once the lifts stop
You can still climb the alpine ridges into April without a lift. Lower down the snow disappears quickly.
The thermals return
From April the air lifts reliably again. The launch site near the summit is among the best in the country.
Two springs in one day
Down at Lake Ossiach the season is three weeks ahead. To see both, walk downhill rather than up.
The quiet weeks
Between the ski season and the summer the Kanzelbahn stands still and many huts are closed. In return you meet almost nobody on the paths.
Green from late May
The pastures at 1,400 metres come later than in the valley. When they do come, it happens fast.
Above the sea of fog
In October low cloud often sits over Lake Ossiach while the sun shines up here. The view runs across a white surface all the way to the Karawanken. It is why many people come in autumn.
Walking without the heat
147 kilometres of paths, and by September temperatures that make midday walking pleasant again.
Bringing the cattle down
In late September the animals come down from the pastures, decorated and noisy. Dates depend on the weather and are usually fixed only shortly beforehand.
The larches turn
From mid-October the larches on the slopes turn yellow. It lasts two weeks, then the first storm takes the needles.
Last rides
The Kanzelbahn usually runs until early November. After that the mountain belongs to those who walk.
Clear nights
Little stray light, cold air, the solar observatory next door. In autumn you see more stars from the terrace than on most summer nights.

Kanzelhöhe Solar Observatory
One of Europe's longest continuously operating solar observatories, run today by the University of Graz. Guided tours allow a look at the sun through the telescope.
Paragliding from the Gerlitzen
The thermals make the Gerlitzen one of Carinthia's best-known flying mountains, with launch sites at several altitudes. Tandem flights are offered locally.
The Kanzelbahn, running since 1928
Carinthia's oldest cable car runs from Annenheim on Lake Ossiach up to Kanzelhöhe. Alternatively the mountain is reached via the Gerlitzen Alpine Road, a toll road up to around 1,800 m.
Mountain huts and restaurants
Around the summit and along the pistes are managed mountain huts – a stop on the way down in winter, a snack between stages in summer.
Lake Ossiach
Carinthia's third-largest lake lies directly below the Gerlitzen. Swimming, sailing, stand-up paddling and the cycle path around the lake – in summer the water becomes pleasantly warm.
Landskron Castle with eagle arena and monkey mountain
The castle ruin on its rocky cone above the lake hosts the birds-of-prey flight show; at the foot of the hill Japanese macaques live in a large stretch of woodland.
Ossiach Abbey
The former Benedictine abbey on the southern shore is today the heart of the Carinthischer Sommer music festival – baroque abbey church included.
Villach
Austria's southernmost city with an old town, a weekly market and the Warmbad thermal spa. A good rainy-day plan.
Bleistätt moor and the Tiebel estuary slow trail
A restored wetland at the eastern end of the lake with observation points – birds, beavers, butterflies. Flat, pushchair-friendly, quiet.
Nockberge Biosphere Reserve
The gentle, rounded domes of the Nockberge start practically behind the building and reach all the way to Turracher Höhe. A UNESCO biosphere reserve since 2012.
Lake Faak and the Karawanks
Turquoise water south of Villach, behind it the wall of the Karawanks and the border with Slovenia and Italy.
Klagenfurt and Lake Wörthersee
The regional capital with Minimundus, the Lindwurm fountain and Lake Wörthersee – just under an hour by car.
Planetenweg zum Sonnenobservatorium
A theme trail through the solar system: starting at Neptune and ending at the sun by the Kanzelhöhe solar observatory. To scale that is 160 billion kilometres; in reality it is just under two.
Pöllingerhütte auf 1.660 m
The Moserbahn and Pöllingerbahn chairlifts carry you on up from the Kanzelhöhe. From the hut it is a comfortable 45-minute walk to the summit.
Speicherseen
In winter they supply water for snowmaking; in summer their shallow edges are a favourite paddling spot for children.
Kärnten Card
Around 130 attractions across the province for a single price, including the Kanzelbahn, Landskron Castle and the Affenberg. It usually pays off from the third outing.
Schifffahrt über den Ossiacher See
The MS Ossiach and MS Gerlitze sail between the lakeside villages in summer. Take the cable car down, the boat to St Andrä and walk up to Landskron Castle – a whole day without a car.
Kletterwald und Familywald Ossiach
More than 150 exercises at various heights, plus a walkway with rope bridges for smaller children. The leafy forest stays pleasant even on hot days.

Holiday house or holiday apartment on the Gerlitzen Alpe?
People searching for a holiday house on the Gerlitzen usually mean what we offer: a place of your own with kitchen and bathroom, not a hotel room. Our two units No. 2.302 Alpenblick and No. 2.306 are apartments in the same building by the mid-station at 1,440 metres – so in winter you start on skis from the door rather than driving up first.
A holiday at the Kanzelhöhe differs from one down in the valley mainly in the morning. While low cloud lingers over Annenheim, Sattendorf and Treffen, up here you are already in the sun. The reverse holds too: for a swim in Lake Ossiach you ride the Kanzelbahn down for ten minutes. Mountain and lake in one day is habit here, not planning.
For longer stays, apartment No. 2.302 has its own workspace. If you are travelling with a dog, please book No. 2.306 – dogs are not permitted in 2.302. Both apartments include a free underground parking space, which is worth more in winter than it sounds.
The mountain year
Four seasons at 1,440 metres
Almost a thousand metres separate this place from the lakeshore. You notice it on nearly every day of the year, and it is the real reason to stay up here rather than below.
In winter the day starts without a drive. The skis stand by the door and the piste begins where the pavement ends. Fifty-three kilometres of piste, eighteen lifts, and huts in the evening that do not close the moment the lifts stop. Anyone who has queued at a valley station at half past seven knows what that is worth.
In spring things fall quiet. The ski season usually ends in early April, the Kanzelbahn then stands until late May, and most huts close with it. It is a poor time for guests who expect a full programme and a very good one for everyone else. Down by the lake spring is already under way – so you walk downhill to find it.
In summer the mountain opens again. A hundred and forty-seven kilometres of paths, the adventure arena at the top station for children, the PROlitzen Trail for those who prefer rolling downhill. And because it rarely exceeds 25 degrees up here, walking works at midday too. For a swim you ride the gondola down.
In autumn comes the thing some guests arrive for and nothing else: low cloud settles over Lake Ossiach while the sun stands up here. You look out of the window onto a white surface with the Karawanken rising from it. It often holds until early November, when the cable car runs for the last time.

Can you manage without a car?+
For a day, yes: the Kanzelbahn down to Annenheim, a boat across Lake Ossiach and a walk up to Landskron Castle. For shopping and trips further afield a car is more practical.
What is there to do when it rains?+
The forest high-ropes course and the Ossiach climbing forest sit under leaf cover and work in light rain. Otherwise the Warmbad Villach thermal baths or the Terra Mystica show mines at Bad Bleiberg are good options.
Is the mountain suitable for small children?+
Yes. The adventure arena at the Kanzelhöhe is right by the top station, with a tubing run, wooden ball track, trampoline and playground. The planet trail to the solar observatory is just under two kilometres and flat.
