A modern holiday apartment – what the word actually means
“Modern interior” in a listing often means the kitchen is from 2019 and everything else from 1994. There are a few things that let you tell the difference before you book.
The layout says more than the furniture
Old holiday flats have long corridors, small windows facing the weather and a bathroom with no window. Newer and well-renovated apartments turn the living space towards the view, put the bedrooms at the back and give the bathroom daylight or at least proper ventilation.
Look at the photos with that in mind: where is the dining table, where is the window, which way does the door open?
Light and view
On a mountain you do not live indoors, you look out. A balcony facing the road is not a balcony.
Our Ossiachersee apartment has a balcony with views of the mountains and the lake. Apartment No. 2.302 on the Gerlitzen Alpe is called Alpenblick because it has one.
Heating, windows, sauna
What you notice in winter: triple glazing, doors that seal, a heating system that works reliably at 1,700 metres. What you notice in summer: that it does not become unbearable under the roof.
Our Almzeit chalet apartment at Turracher Höhe has its own sauna – not as a line in a brochure, but in the apartment, with no booking slot and no strangers.
Materials that last
Swiss stone pine, larch, stone and wool still look good after ten years. High-gloss fronts and imitation leather do not.
Around Turracher Höhe stand some of the largest contiguous stone pine forests in Europe. It makes sense to use the material that grows outside the door anyway.
What “modern” does not replace
A new kitchen does not create a good location. Ten minutes to the piste stay ten minutes, induction hob or not.
That is why every one of our location pages says what is actually outside the door – sights ordered by distance, activities split into winter and summer, and a map showing exactly where the building stands.
